Jose Marti Bust

Description

Jose Marti  1853-1895. This small bust is ideal to adorn desks, mantle pieces and coffee tables. Marti’s unwavering commitment to social justice, liberty, education earned him the position of Cuba’s national hero.

Here’s a chance to own one of these limited run of 50 pieces of this pioneer of anti-imperialism, whose likenesses are prominently and proudly displayed in many gardens, parks and residencies throughout Cuba. I wanted to capture his resilient and defiant nature with this piece, although it is miniature it definitely has a grand feel to it.

The off white base is made of reconstituted stone, the bust itself is cold cast bronze. The total height of the sculpture is 100mm( just under 4″), the width is 50mm and it weighs around 250g. I’ve applied felt feet to prevent scratching your furniture. No two will be totally identical as they’re made by hand, and aged for that revolutionary feel, but all will appear very similar to the photo, and I think better in person- my photography skills really need work! A brief biography:

Born on January 28, 1853, in Havana, Marti started to become involved in politics at a young age, after witnessing the cruelty of the Spanish colonial rule over Cuba. At the age of 16 he was arrested for his views on Cuban independence and sentenced to hard labour. Upon his release he was exiled to Spain, where he studied and continued publishing his written work to push for Cuba’s sovereignty .

By 1892, now living in New York and working as a journalist, he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party, with the goal of freeing Cuba and Latin America from the imperialist rule of the Spanish by promoting independence.

In 1895 Marti returned to Cuba in the armed struggle against the Spanish, where he was killed in battle in 1895. His legacy lives on in his work; essays and poetry such as Versos Sencillos which call for freedom, unity and justice.
